Leo dogs and cats
Born to be adored, and generous enough to let you do it
A Leo dog or cat assumes every visitor came to see them, and is usually right. The Sun is their ruler, which explains the appetite for attention, admiration and a good spot to show off their coat. Under the swagger sits a loyal heart, at its most generous right after someone has told them how beautiful they are.
Leo dogs
To a Leo dog, every room is a stage. Tail up, head high, they do a slow lap so everyone can admire them, then choose the rug with the best view of the audience. At the park they bring the stick to whoever has the biggest crowd around them. If people laugh at something they did, they will do it again immediately, with flourishes.
Praise is the Leo dog's favourite food, second only to actual food. Tell them they are a good dog and you can watch them grow an inch. They have a warm, sunny nature and will share their bed with the cat, the new puppy and anyone who looks sad. Ignore them for too long, though, and expect a gentle, dramatic sigh from the middle of the floor.
Leo cats
From the back of the sofa, the Leo cat holds court and expects visitors to approach. Their coat is groomed to perfection and arranged for viewing in the best light the room can offer. When guests arrive they make an entrance, walk the length of the table they are not allowed on, accept compliments from everyone and then leave.
Whatever you are paying attention to, a Leo cat sits on it, the newspaper, the knitting, the birthday card you are trying to write. Attention is their sunlight. Give it freely and they are the most affectionate cat imaginable, head bumping your chin and purring loudly enough to be heard from the hall. They also bring gifts, proudly, and wait to be thanked.
Leo rabbits, birds and small wonders
Leo rabbits save their best leaps for when someone is watching. Guinea pigs born under the Lion wheek for an audience and expect applause for finishing a carrot. A Leo cockatiel raises their crest and sings to the mirror. With people leaning on the fence, a Leo horse moves as though a parade is passing.
The best seat in the house is permanently taken, and every photo you try to take of something else has a pet in it. Classic Lion. They sulk when ignored, glows when praised and lies in the exact centre of whichever room has the most people in it.
Say your admiration out loud. Tell a Leo pet how gorgeous they are, take their photo and let them be the hero of every game. Warmth and attention, given generously, are what make them shine.
Leo pets play to whoever is watching, and a fire owner watches with the same delight. Air owners keep the compliments coming, which a Leo considers only fair. Water owners, and earth owners with their steady routines, give this proud animal permission to be soft when nobody else is looking.
Your Leo season arrival came through the door like royalty and still expects the anniversary to be marked properly. Their gotcha day deserves a little fanfare.
Hold a proper photo shoot in your Leo pet's best light, with a new toy presented like a trophy and a round of applause for every pose. A ribbon on the collar suits the occasion, but only if they are happy wearing it.

Is my pet a Leo?
In 2026 the Sun is in Leo from 22 July to 22 August, so a pet born or adopted in that window is a Leo. The dates shift by a day or so from year to year, and on the first and last day the hour decides, so check the exact date with Hali's pet sign finder.
What if I don't know my pet's birthday?
Use their gotcha day, the day they came home to you. Plenty of people read a rescue animal's chart from that day, and it describes the start of your life together, which is a lovely thing to have a sign for.
