North Node

Find your North Node and see where it points

The direction that feels strange at first and like coming home once you get there

The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path heading north, and in astrology it marks the direction of growth in your chart. The South Node sits exactly opposite and shows the familiar habits and talents you fall back on. Your North Node sign and house describe the less comfortable way of living that tends to make you feel most alive.

What is the North Node in astrology?

The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path through the sky, as the Moon heads north. It is geometry, with no mass and no surface, a crossing point that slides slowly backwards through the zodiac. In a birth chart, astrologers read it as the direction of growth, the way of living that feels awkward at first and then, unexpectedly, like coming alive.

Think of the first time you raised your hand with a half formed idea, or took the long way home just to see where it went. Small, slightly terrifying, oddly thrilling. That feeling is the North Node in miniature. It hands out no fate and no verdict. It points, gently and persistently, at the door you keep walking past, and the sign and house it sits in describe what kind of door it is.

What is my North Node, and how do I find it?

Finding your North Node takes your birth date, and ideally your birth time and place. The date alone gives the sign, because the node spends about 18.6 months in each one, so everyone born in the same stretch shares it. Time and place give the house, which is personal to you and shifts every couple of hours through the day.

Put your details into the calculator below and Hali works out your True Node, the real position rather than a smoothed average, along with the South Node opposite it. If you do not know your birth time, you still get the sign. We leave the house blank rather than guess, because a wrong house is worse than an honest gap.

What does the South Node mean?

The South Node is the point exactly opposite the North Node, where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic heading south. In a chart it describes the familiar, the talents you have practised so long they run on their own, the role you fall into at every family dinner, the habit you reach for when tired.

Nothing about the South Node is bad. It is the job you could do asleep, and the friend who says "you always do this" and is annoyingly right. Astrologers who work with past lives read it as what you arrive already knowing. Most modern astrologers see a gift you overuse. Keep it, use it, and notice when it has become a hiding place.

Both nodes always work as an axis. North Node in Aries means South Node in Libra, and North Node in your 10th house means South Node in your 4th, all the way round the wheel. Growth usually comes from carrying the South Node's skill over to the North Node's side of the room, where it turns out to be useful in new ways.

How does your North Node sign shape you?

Your North Node sign is the zodiac sign the node occupied when you were born, and it names the quality you are growing towards. With the node in Leo, that might be the nerve to be seen and to play. In Capricorn, the patience to build something that lasts. In Pisces, the willingness to stop managing everything and float for a bit.

Since the node moves backwards and lingers for about 18.6 months, your North Node sign is generational in a small way, and most of your school year probably shares it. What makes it yours is the house, the aspects it makes and how the rest of your chart meets it. Each sign page below goes into the pull, the path and the small daily moves.

Which North Node sign matches your birth date?

Every North Node sign has a date range, and the table below lists them all, so you can find your sign from a birthday alone. Because the node travels backwards, the order runs Aries, then Pisces, then Aquarius, against the usual direction of the zodiac. Scan down to the stretch that holds your birthday and read across.

Anyone born within a few weeks of a change should use the calculator rather than the table. The True Node wobbles near sign edges and can step back and forth across the line before it settles, which is exactly where a table of round dates can mislead you.

What does your North Node house show?

A North Node house is the part of life where your growth plays out, worked out from your birth time and place. The sign says how and the house says where. North Node in your 7th house points towards partnership and letting someone else in on the decisions. In your 10th house it points towards public work and a reputation built on purpose.

Opposite sits the South Node house, which usually shows where you do too much. With the North Node in your 1st house and the South Node in your 7th, you may know a partner's five year plan far better than your own. The house pages below take each placement in turn.

How can you work with your nodes day to day?

Working with your nodes means noticing when you are running on South Node autopilot and choosing, now and then, one small North Node move instead. Nobody is asking for a personality transplant. A little more range is plenty, and one unfamiliar choice a week tends to change more than any grand resolution.

Start by naming your South Node move in plain words. Maybe it is fixing the problem before anyone asks, or making the joke so nobody gets serious. Then pick the North Node version and try it once this week, somewhere low stakes. Say your price first. Let the silence sit. Ask for help carrying the boxes.

Expect it to feel wrong for a while. The familiar always feels like competence, and the new direction often feels like being bad at something in public. That awkwardness is usually a sign you are pointed the right way, and it softens with practice, the way a new pair of boots does.

When is your nodal return?

A nodal return is the moment the moving North Node comes back to the exact place it held when you were born, roughly every 18.61 years. For most people that lands in the late teens, the late thirties, the mid fifties and the mid seventies, and each one often arrives with a decision attached.

Halfway between returns comes the nodal half return, when the moving North Node crosses your natal South Node. Astrologers watch it as the season the old pattern gets loud, sometimes loud enough that you finally hear it. Neither return guarantees an event. Both are stretches when the question of which way you are facing gets harder to ignore.

Where is the North Node right now?

The transiting North Node is the node's current position in the sky, and right now it is in Aquarius, with the South Node in Leo. It stays there until 26 March 2028, then moves backwards into Capricorn. Everyone feels this placement at once, which makes it collective weather rather than a personal forecast.

While the node moves through Aquarius, the culture tends to reward Aquarius qualities and grow tired of the Leo habits it has relied on. In your own chart, the house where Aquarius falls is where the current runs strongest. Check whether the node is crossing your Sun, Moon or Ascendant, because that is when the theme stops being background noise.

In the sky now

The North Node is at 28° Aquarius, with the South Node in Leo. It arrived on 27 July 2026 and stays until 26 March 2028, then moves into Capricorn.

True Node or Mean Node, which should you use?

The True Node is the actual position of the node at a given moment, including the small wobble caused by the Sun tugging on the Moon's orbit. The Mean Node is a smoothed average that irons the wobble out. Most of the time they sit close together, and most charts land in the same sign either way.

Near a sign boundary they can disagree, which is why two websites sometimes hand you two different North Nodes. Hali uses the True Node by default, because it describes where the crossing point actually was when you arrived. If an older book or a favourite astrologer uses the Mean Node, neither is wrong. They are measuring slightly different things.

Why is it called the Head of the Dragon?

The Head of the Dragon, Caput Draconis, is the old name for the North Node, and the Tail of the Dragon, Cauda Draconis, is the South Node. The image comes from eclipses. Eclipses only happen when the Sun and Moon are near the nodes, and older skywatchers pictured a dragon at those points, swallowing the light and letting it go again.

Medieval astrologers read the Head as increasing and the Tail as releasing, adding to whatever planet it touched or draining it. Modern astrology softened that into a story about growth. The dragon is still worth keeping, though. It is a good picture of the axis, a hungry front end pointed at what you want and a long tail that knows where you have been.

Questions people ask about the North Node

What does North Node mean in simple terms?

In simple terms, the North Node is the direction your chart suggests you grow in. It is a point in the sky, the place where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's heading north. Its sign and house describe what that growth looks like for you.

Is the North Node my destiny?

Think of it as a direction, never a fate. It shows a way of living that often feels alive when you try it, and you are free to ignore it, visit at weekends or move in. Staying with the South Node for a while is allowed, and nobody is keeping score.

How long does the North Node stay in one sign?

About 18.6 months. A full trip through all twelve signs takes about 18.61 years, moving backwards against the usual order of the zodiac.

Can I know my North Node without a birth time?

Yes, the sign comes from your birth date alone. The house needs your birth time, so Hali leaves it blank when the time is unknown instead of guessing.

Why does my North Node differ between websites?

Usually because one site uses the True Node and another uses the Mean Node. They agree almost always but can disagree near the edge of a sign. Hali uses the True Node.

Is it bad to have a strong South Node?

Not at all. A strong South Node means a set of skills you can rely on. The only catch is that reliable things become hiding places, so it helps to notice when the gift is being used to dodge the growth.

Do the nodes affect relationships?

They often show up there. Another person's nodes touching your Sun, Moon or angles are a classic synastry link, and South Node contacts can feel like instant familiarity. Familiar is not always good for you, which is worth remembering on a third date.

What is the difference between the North Node and South Node?

One points to where you are growing and the other to what you already know by heart. They always sit in opposite signs and opposite houses, so reading one without the other tells half the story.

Your nodes are one thread in your chart. See the whole weave.
