Your year

Every birthday, your year moves on one sign. This is annual profection, the oldest timing technique in Western astrology. Your year of life belongs to one house of your chart, ruled by one planet, the lord of your year. Enter your birth date, time and place to see which house you are in now, which planet holds your year, and the years waiting after it.

What is a profection year?

Picture your chart as a clock with twelve hours. On the day you were born, the hand points at your Rising sign, your 1st house. On your first birthday it moves on to the next sign, your 2nd house, and on each birthday after that it moves one more. Twelve birthdays later it is back where it began, and a new cycle opens.

So every year of your life has a house, and that house tells you where the year’s attention gathers: home, love, work, friends, study, rest. The same house comes back every twelve years, which is why some people notice an echo between the ages of 12, 24 and 36.

What is the lord of the year?

Each year also has a ruler. The sign your year falls in is ruled by one of the seven planets the ancient astrologers could see, and that planet becomes the lord of your year. Its place in your birth chart colours the whole year, and its movements through the sky, the signs it crosses and the planets it meets, are said to speak loudest for you.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto never rule a profected year. The technique was written down more than sixteen centuries before Uranus was found in 1781, and it works with the seven lights visible to the eye.

What each house year brings

1st house year
A year about you: your body, your vitality and the way you meet the world. A new twelve year cycle begins, and what you start now sets its tone.
2nd house year
A year about what sustains you: money, possessions, your own resources and what you value enough to keep.
3rd house year
A year of nearby things: siblings, neighbours, short journeys, messages and learning. The old astrologers called this place the Goddess, where the Moon rejoices.
4th house year
A year about roots: home, family, parents and the private life behind the front door.
5th house year
A year of joy: pleasure, romance, creativity, children and play. The old astrologers called this place Good Fortune, where Venus rejoices.
6th house year
A year of tending: work, daily routines, health and the small disciplines that keep a life running. It tends to reward steady care over grand plans.
7th house year
A year of others: partners, marriage, close collaborators and open rivals, everyone who meets you face to face.
8th house year
A year of depth: shared money, debts and inheritances, endings and the letting go that makes room for what comes next.
9th house year
A year of the far horizon: travel, study, belief, teachers and big ideas. The old astrologers called this place God, where the Sun rejoices.
10th house year
A year of your public life: career, reputation, achievement and the work you are seen for. It is the summit of your chart.
11th house year
A year of friends and hopes: alliances, community, benefactors and the future you build with others. The old astrologers called this place the Good Spirit, where Jupiter rejoices.
12th house year
A year behind the scenes: rest, retreat, solitude and the quiet work no one sees. It closes the cycle, a good year to finish, heal and clear space before the 1st house returns.

How to read your year

Start with the house. It names the part of life that comes forward this year, the room of the house where the lights are on.

Then look at the lord of the year. Where it sits in your birth chart shows the tone it brings, and any planets of yours that live in the year’s sign wake up too. Through the year, watch the lord as it moves. A slow, steady lord makes for a slow, steady year. A lord that turns retrograde, crosses your Rising or meets your Sun marks the months when the year speaks most clearly.

Your year runs from one birthday to the next, inside the longer weather of your life chapters. In the Hali app, Today greets you on your birthday with the house and lord of the year beginning, and your Chart tab keeps the whole cycle in view.

Where do profections come from?

Profections are as old as the horoscope itself. Dorotheus of Sidon taught them in verse in the 1st century, Ptolemy described them in the 2nd, and Vettius Valens, an astrologer from Antioch who worked in Alexandria, used them on the charts of his clients and students. For centuries astrologers in the Greek, Persian and Arabic traditions used them to judge the year ahead.

They faded from Western astrology in the modern era and returned in the 1990s, when Project Hindsight began translating the Greek texts again, led by Robert Schmidt and Robert Hand. Chris Brennan’s Hellenistic Astrology brought them to a wide audience in 2017. Today they are one of the most widely used techniques in the revival of traditional astrology, because they are simple, personal and dated.

Why do profections use whole signs?

Because the astrologers who invented them counted houses that way. In whole sign houses your Rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on, each house one complete sign. A profection moves one whole sign a year, so the two fit together exactly.

Your Hali birth chart shows Placidus houses, which divide the sky by time rather than by sign. Most of the time the two agree. When they do not, your year’s house comes from whole signs, and Hali says so.

How Hali works out your year

  • Your Rising sign comes from your exact birth time and place, from the same astronomy engine behind every Hali birth chart.
  • Your age is counted in whole years from your birthday on the local calendar. A 29 February birthday turns on 28 February in other years.
  • The year’s sign is that many signs on from your Rising sign, and its lord is the sign’s traditional ruler.
  • With a rough birth time, Hali checks whether your Rising sign sits within two degrees of a sign’s edge and tells you if your year could be the one beside it.

Frequently asked questions

What is my profection year?

Your profection year is the house of your chart that your current year of life belongs to. At birth the year belongs to your Rising sign, your 1st house. Each birthday it moves on one sign, so the house changes every year and the cycle starts again every twelve years. Enter your birth date, time and place above to see yours.

How do I work out my profection year?

Take your age, divide it by 12 and add 1 to what is left over. That is your house year. At 29, for example, 29 divided by 12 leaves 5, so you are in a 6th house year. Count that many signs on from your Rising sign to find the sign of the year, and its ruler is your lord of the year.

What is the lord of the year?

The lord of the year is the traditional ruler of your profected sign. It is the planet whose condition in your birth chart, and whose movements through the sky, are said to speak loudest for you that year. It is always one of the seven planets visible to the eye: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn.

Do profections use whole sign houses?

Yes. Profections move one whole sign a year, and the Hellenistic astrologers who used them counted houses in whole signs, with the Rising sign as the 1st house. That is why your profected house can differ from the houses on a Placidus chart.

When does a profection year start?

On your birthday. Hali starts each year on the calendar date of your birth. Some astrologers start it at the exact moment of your solar return, when the Sun comes back to its birth position, which falls on your birthday or the day either side.

Can I find my profection year without a birth time?

Not reliably. The cycle starts at your Rising sign, and the Rising sign changes every couple of hours. A rough birth time is usually enough, unless your Rising sign sits close to the edge of a sign.

What happens in a 1st house profection year?

A 1st house year comes at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and every twelve years after. It is a year about you, your body and the way you meet the world, and it opens a new twelve year cycle. Your lord of the year is the ruler of your own Rising sign.
