What does your Venus sign mean?
Venus is the planet of love, pleasure, beauty and value. Your Venus sign describes your style of affection, the kind of attention that makes you feel cared for, your taste, and what you’re willing to spend time and money on.
Your Sun sign is who you are. Your Venus sign is what you’re drawn to. That’s why two people with the same Sun sign can fall in love in completely different ways.
How far can Venus be from your Sun sign?
Never more than two signs. Venus orbits inside Earth’s orbit, so from here it always stays fairly close to the Sun, never more than about 47 degrees away. We measured how often each arrangement occurred over a century of births.
| Your Venus sign is | Share of people, 1950 to 2049 |
|---|---|
| The same as your Sun sign | 23.7% |
| One sign before or after your Sun sign | 58.4% |
| Two signs before or after your Sun sign | 17.9% |
| Three or more signs away | 0% |
So a Taurus can have Venus in Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and nothing else. If a website ever gives a Taurus Venus in Scorpio, check the birth details.
How long does Venus stay in each sign?
Usually around 25 days, but not always. Most calculators quote a single number. The real range is much wider.
| Venus fact, 1950 to 2049 | Value |
|---|---|
| Typical stay in one sign | 24 to 32 days |
| Longest stay in one sign | about 126 days, in retrograde years |
| Share of time Venus is retrograde | 7.3% |
| How often Venus turns retrograde | about every 19 months |
| How long a Venus retrograde lasts | 41 to 43 days |
| Days when Venus changes sign | 3.5%, about 1 birthday in 29 |
When Venus turns retrograde it can sit in one sign for around four months. So in some years one Venus sign is far more common than the others among babies born that year.
Do I need my birth time?
Almost never. On about 96% of days Venus stays in the same sign from midnight to midnight, so your birth date is enough. On the other days the calculator shows both possible signs and the exact local time Venus moved, so even a rough birth time usually settles it.
Was Venus retrograde when you were born?
About 1 person in 14 was born during a Venus retrograde, because Venus is retrograde 7.3% of the time. The calculator tells you if you’re one of them.
Astrologers often read a retrograde Venus as love and values that work inwardly. People born with it tend to take longer to trust their feelings, revisit old attachments, and have a very clear sense of what they won’t settle for. It isn’t a sign of bad luck in love.
What each Venus sign looks for
Read your Venus sign as your style of affection. Then look at its house in your full chart to see where in life you go looking for beauty and connection.
Venus in Aries. You fall fast and say so. Chemistry matters more than a slow build, and you respect people who are as direct as you are.
Venus in Taurus. Love, for you, is physical and loyal. Good food, touch, comfort and someone who shows up the same way every time.
Venus in Gemini. You fall for minds. If the conversation goes flat, so does the attraction, and you need someone who can keep up.
Venus in Cancer. You love by looking after people. Safety comes first, and once you’ve let someone in, you’re fiercely protective.
Venus in Leo. You want to be adored and you adore back generously. Romance should feel a little like a celebration.
Venus in Virgo. You show love through attention to detail: remembering, fixing, helping. You notice small kindnesses others miss.
Venus in Libra. You value balance, beauty and fairness. Partnership feels natural to you, and you work hard to keep the peace.
Venus in Scorpio. All or nothing. You want depth, loyalty and honesty, and casual connection rarely interests you.
Venus in Sagittarius. You need freedom inside love. A partner who travels, laughs and grows with you beats one who holds on tight.
Venus in Capricorn. You take love seriously and build it slowly. Reliability is romantic to you, and you show care through commitment.
Venus in Aquarius. Friendship first. You value independence, odd minds and people who let you be exactly yourself.
Venus in Pisces. You love with your whole imagination. Tender, romantic and generous, you sometimes see people as they could be rather than as they are.
Venus in compatibility
Venus is one of the first planets astrologers look at when comparing two charts. When one person’s Venus touches the other’s Sun, Moon or Mars, people often describe instant ease or attraction. Compare your chart with someone else’s in our compatibility calculator, which shows the three strongest connections between you, with no fake percentages.
Venus, Mars and Mercury together
Venus is how you love, Mars is how you pursue what you want, and Mercury is how you think and talk. Find your Mars sign and Mercury sign, or see all of them at once in your free birth chart.
How we calculated this
The calculator uses Hali’s chart engine, built on astronomy-engine and NASA JPL based data, and converts your birth time with historical time zone rules. For the statistics on this page, we computed Venus’s apparent position every six hours from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 2050 and counted sign changes, retrograde periods and the distance between Venus and the Sun.
