The 1st house in astrology: your Ascendant and how you begin

The 1st house is the part of your chart that begins at your Ascendant, the point on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It covers your body, your temperament, how you start things and the impression you make. Planets here tend to be easy for other people to see in you.

What does the 1st house mean?

It’s the house of you, as you show up. Where the other houses describe areas of life like money, home or work, the 1st house describes the person walking into all of them.

That includes your body and physical presence, your natural pace and temperament, and the way you approach anything new. It’s also the house most linked to first impressions, because it describes what people notice before they know you.

What is the Ascendant?

The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at your birth. Its sign is your Rising sign, and it marks the start of the 1st house.

Greek astrologers called this point the horoskopos, the “hour marker”, because it changes so quickly that it pins a chart to a specific time. The word horoscope comes from it. That’s also why you need an exact birth time to know your 1st house at all.

What is a chart ruler?

The planet that rules your Rising sign is called your chart ruler. If you have Aries rising, your chart ruler is Mars. With Virgo rising, it’s Mercury.

Astrologers give the chart ruler extra weight, because it carries the themes of your 1st house into whichever house and sign it occupies. Your Hali reading names your chart ruler and follows it through your chart.

Which birth time puts your Sun in the 1st house?

Think of the Sun as the hand of a clock that sweeps through all twelve houses in a single day. A 1st house Sun usually means you arrived in the hours just before sunrise, while the Sun was still below the eastern horizon and about to come up.

Born between about 4am and 7am? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 1st house.

Share of births with the Sun in the 1st house, by hour of local solar time, at 40° north (the latitude of Madrid and New York). Daylight saving and time zones can move your clock an hour or so away from solar time, so check your own chart to be sure.

What do planets in the 1st house mean?

Whatever sits in the 1st house tends to be among the most visible parts of you. People often clock its qualities before they ever learn your Sun sign.

Sun in the 1st house. Self and presentation are hard to separate here. Your sense of purpose is closely tied to how you show up, and you tend to lead with it.

Moon in the 1st house. Feelings show on your face. People can often read your mood before you’ve said a word.

Mercury in the 1st house. Quick, curious and talkative is the first read people get. Traditional astrology called this house Mercury’s joy, where it works especially well.

Venus in the 1st house. Charm and an eye for style tend to be part of your first impression.

Mars in the 1st house. Direct and energetic, you usually act before you’ve finished deciding.

Saturn in the 1st house. First impressions can read as serious or reserved. Give it time, and you usually relax into yourself.

Distance from the Ascendant matters. A planet a few degrees below it acts strongly through the 1st house, while one near the far end of the house is quieter.

What if my 1st house is empty?

Nothing is wrong. Most charts have several empty houses, simply because there are more houses than planets.

An empty 1st house still has a sign on its cusp, your Rising sign, and a ruler. Look at your chart ruler’s sign and house to see how 1st house themes play out for you.

Why is my 1st house bigger or smaller than 30°?

Placidus, the house system Hali uses, cuts the sky up by time instead of into equal slices. At high latitudes the zodiac rises at very uneven speeds, so some houses stretch and others shrink.

Here is how far the 1st house swings in size across one day, at four latitudes.

PlaceLatitudeSmallest 1st houseLargest 1st house
Equator0°27.6°32.6°
Madrid40.4°N19.6°47.8°
London51.5°N15.7°60.5°
Reykjavík64.1°N6.9°114.9°

A 1st house of 60° can hold two whole signs, one of them without its own house cusp. Astrologers call that an intercepted sign. Go above about 66° latitude and Placidus breaks down altogether. Hali then uses Whole Sign houses instead and flags it on your chart.

What’s the difference between the 1st and 7th houses?

They’re opposite ends of the same line. The 1st house starts at the Ascendant, the eastern horizon, and the 7th house starts at the Descendant, the western horizon.

Traditionally the 1st house is you and the 7th is the people you meet one to one, especially partners. Planets across the two houses often describe a pull between doing things your way and doing them together.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 1st house the same as my Rising sign?

Nearly. Your Rising sign is the sign on the Ascendant, which is where the 1st house begins. In Placidus houses the 1st house can also run into the next sign, so it may contain more than one.

Do I need my birth time for the 1st house?

Yes. The Ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in a day, so without a birth time there is no reliable 1st house, and Hali won’t invent one.

What is an angular house?

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses start at the four angles of the chart. Astrologers consider planets in these houses especially prominent.

Which body parts does the 1st house rule?

Traditionally the head and face, echoing Aries. This is a historical association, not health advice.

Hali computed the house sizes from Placidus cusps, sampled every five minutes across a full day at each latitude. The horoskopos and the planetary joys are described in Vettius Valens, Anthology, and in the Hellenistic tradition generally. The data is yours to reuse under CC BY 4.0.
