Mercury in astrology: meaning, rulership and retrograde

Mercury is the planet of thinking, speaking, learning and trade. In a birth chart, its sign describes how your mind works and how you put things into words, and its house shows where you do most of your thinking. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo and is never more than 28° from the Sun.

What does Mercury mean in a birth chart?

Mercury is how you take in information, make sense of it and pass it on. It covers speech and writing, learning style, curiosity, quick decisions, everyday errands and the way you argue a point.

Its sign shows the style. Mercury in Taurus tends to think slowly and solidly and change its mind rarely, while Mercury in Gemini tends to think in fast connections and lose interest once it’s figured something out. Its house shows where your attention naturally goes, whether that’s work, relationships, money or ideas.

Mercury also links to siblings, neighbours, short trips and commerce in traditional astrology, all things that involve messages moving back and forth.

Why is Mercury always close to the Sun?

Because Mercury orbits closer to the Sun than we do. From Earth it never appears more than about 28° from the Sun, and over a century of positions the furthest it reached was 27.8°.

That has a direct effect on your chart. Mercury is always in the same sign as your Sun or a neighbouring one, never two signs away. We checked every day from 1950 to 2049, and Mercury shared the Sun’s sign on 51.3% of them.

So if your Sun is in Aries, your Mercury is in Pisces, Aries or Taurus. The birth chart calculator tells you which.

How long does Mercury stay in each sign?

Usually two to three weeks, but it varies a lot. Across 1950 to 2049, the median stay was 18.8 days.

When Mercury turns retrograde near the edge of a sign, it can step back into the previous sign and stay much longer. The longest stay in that century was 69 days. The shortest were only hours, when Mercury dipped back over a boundary and crossed it again almost immediately.

What is Mercury retrograde, really?

It’s an optical effect. Mercury moves faster than Earth, and when it passes between us and the Sun, it appears to slow down, stop and move backwards against the stars for a few weeks, before turning forward again.

Here are the numbers, computed from planetary positions.

Astrologers traditionally read Mercury retrograde as a time to review, revise and double check. There’s no evidence that it breaks phones or derails contracts, but checking your messages before you hit send is good advice in any month. What does it mean to be born with Mercury retrograde?

About one person in five has it. Astrologers often describe natal Mercury retrograde as a mind that turns inward first, revisits ideas and takes its own route to an answer.

It isn’t a flaw and it isn’t rare. Your chart shows an “℞” next to Mercury if it was retrograde when you were born.

What are combust and cazimi Mercury?

Traditional terms for Mercury very close to the Sun. Within about 8.5° of the Sun, Mercury was called combust, burned up and hard to see, and old texts considered it weakened.

Within 17 arcminutes, almost exactly on the Sun’s centre, it was called cazimi, “in the heart of the Sun”, and treated as unusually strong. In our sample of charts from 1950 to 2009, Mercury was within orb of conjunction with the Sun in 29.9% of them, the most common conjunction of all. Read more on the conjunction page.

Where does Mercury’s name come from?

From the Roman messenger god, who matched the Greek Hermes, the winged god of travellers, merchants, writers and thieves. The fastest planet got the fastest god.

Babylonian astronomers linked the same planet to Nabu, god of scribes and writing. Thousands of years apart, two cultures connected the quickest planet with words.
