The 10th house in astrology: career, reputation and the Midheaven

The 10th house crowns your chart, the point that was highest in the sky when you were born. It’s the most public part of you: your career, your reputation, your achievements and the mark you hope to leave. Your roots live in the 4th house. The 10th is where you are going.

What does the 10th house mean?

This is the house of your calling. It describes the work you are known for, how the world sees you and the kind of authority you grow into. It covers bosses and mentors, your public image, and the achievements that feel truly yours.

It isn’t only about job titles. Plenty of people find their 10th house in raising a family, making art or holding a community together. It’s the role you play in the world when you step into the light.

What is the Midheaven?

The Midheaven, or MC from the Latin Medium Coeli, the middle of the sky, is where the Sun’s path crossed the meridian high above you at the moment of your birth. It’s roughly where the Sun stands at noon. In Placidus houses it always marks the start of the 10th house, and its sign describes what you want to be known for.

Does the 10th house show my career?

It shows your public path and your calling, and many astrologers read it first for career. Day to day work belongs to the 6th house and money to the 2nd. The three together give the fuller picture.

Which birth time puts your Sun in the 10th house?

The daily turn of the sky walks the Sun through every house, which is why the hour of birth sets its house. Late morning is the classic 10th house birth, with the Sun climbing toward its highest point at noon. These are the most common hours we found, checking where the Sun fell at ten minute intervals across a year.

Born between about 10am and noon? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 10th house.

Share of births with the Sun in the 10th house, by hour of local solar time, at 40° north (the latitude of Madrid and New York). Daylight saving and time zones can move your clock an hour or so away from solar time, so check your own chart to be sure.

What do planets in the 10th house mean?

Planets up here are on show, in your work and your public life. One close to the Midheaven tends to be the first thing people know you for.

Sun in the 10th house. Visibility suits you. Career and recognition matter deeply to you, and you often rise into a role people can see.

Moon in the 10th house. Feeling runs through your public life. You may work with people, care or the public, and your reputation can wax and wane like the Moon itself.

Mercury in the 10th house. You’re known for your mind and your words. Writing, speaking, teaching and trade suit you well.

Venus in the 10th house. Grace and charm carry your career. Art, beauty, diplomacy and people work can all bring you success.

Mars in the 10th house. Ambitious and driven, you want to lead and you want to win. You build your reputation through bold action.

Jupiter in the 10th house. Jupiter at the top of the chart is a classic sign of public good fortune: growth, recognition and generous mentors.

Saturn in the 10th house. Saturn knows this territory well, since Capricorn, one of its own signs, is the natural sign of the 10th. Success comes through patience and mastery, and it’s built to last.

What if my 10th house is empty?

Plenty of people with no planets in the 10th have big careers. The house is empty only because ten planets can’t occupy twelve houses at once. The sign on your Midheaven and its ruler still describe your calling, and that ruler’s place in your chart shows where your path leads.

Why is my 10th house bigger or smaller than 30°?

Placidus houses, Hali’s choice, divide the sky by time rather than into equal slices, and they grow more unequal as you move away from the equator. The table shows the size of the 10th house through a day, latitude by latitude, at four of them.

Reykjavík64.1°N8.2°49.2°

Above about 66° latitude the Placidus formula has no answer, so Hali uses Whole Sign houses and says so on your chart.

What’s the difference between the 10th and 4th houses?

They’re the two ends of the meridian, the vertical line through your chart. Underneath lies the 4th house, home, family and roots, hidden from view. The 10th is career and public life, out in the open. Your private foundations quietly hold up everything you build in the world.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Midheaven always in the 10th house?

In Placidus houses, which Hali uses, the Midheaven always begins the 10th house. In Whole Sign houses, which Hali uses above about 66° latitude, the Midheaven can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

Does the 10th house show my mother?

Some traditions give the mother to the 10th house and the father to the 4th, and others swap them. Hali reads both houses together for your parents.

Do I need my birth time for the 10th house?

Yes. The Midheaven moves round the zodiac every day, taking the 10th house with it, so a chart without a birth time has no 10th house to show. Hali leaves it out.

Sources and methods

House sizes come from Placidus cusps that Hali sampled across a whole day at each latitude. For the clock, we placed the Sun in its Placidus house at 40.4° north at each ten minute mark in local solar time, on one day in every four during 2001. For the planetary joys and old names we lean on Valens and the Hellenistic writers around him (his Anthology above all), and for the Latin names on the traditional rhyme that runs through the houses one by one.
