The 4th house in astrology: home, family, roots and the IC
The 4th house sits at the very bottom of your chart, the point directly beneath your feet at the moment you were born. It holds your home, your family, your roots and the part of you nobody sees unless you invite them in. It’s where you come from, and where you go when you need to feel safe.

What does the 4th house mean?
This is the house of the hearth. It describes the home you grew up in and the one you are building, the family you were born into and the one you choose. It reaches back further too, toward your ancestors, your heritage and the land your people came from.
Because it lies beneath everything else in the chart, the 4th house is your foundation. Astrologers read it as the emotional ground you stand on, and traditionally as the end of matters, the way things settle, close and come home, including later life.
What is the IC?
The IC, short for Imum Coeli, Latin for the bottom of the sky, is the point of the zodiac exactly opposite your Midheaven. It’s roughly where the Sun sits at local midnight. In Placidus houses it always marks the start of the 4th house.
Planets close to the IC are some of the most private and deeply felt in a chart. They work quietly, like roots, and they hold everything else up.
Which birth time puts your Sun in the 4th house?
Because the sky wheels round once a day, your birth hour decides which house the Sun falls in. Late evening births, in the hours leading up to midnight, tend to put it in the 4th, with the Sun heading for the lowest point beneath you. We tracked its house in ten minute steps through a year to draw the clock below.
Born between about 10pm and midnight? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 4th house.
What do planets in the 4th house mean?
Home is where these planets do their work, in family, memory and the private self. One sitting near the cusp usually makes itself felt most.
Sun in the 4th house. Home and family sit at the heart of who you are. You may come into your own later in life, once your roots have grown deep.
Moon in the 4th house. Cancer, the Moon’s own sign, is the natural sign of this house, so the Moon settles in easily. You need a nest, and you carry your family’s moods and memories wherever you go.
Mercury in the 4th house. Talk, books and ideas fill the house. You might work from home, or keep your thoughts very close to your chest.
Venus in the 4th house. Beautiful homes are your speciality, and peace around the kitchen table is something you treasure. Family bonds can be sweet and strong.
Mars in the 4th house. Things at home run lively and sometimes heated. You fight fiercely for your family and pour real energy into your space.
Jupiter in the 4th house. Think big warm family or a generous, expansive home. Your roots bring blessings, and life often gets better as you age.
Saturn in the 4th house. Family may have asked a lot of you early on. You build your own foundations slowly, and they become solid as stone.
What if my 4th house is empty?
No planets in the 4th says nothing about how much home matters to you. Twelve houses, ten planets, so some always go without. Your IC sign and its ruler still describe home and family, and following that ruler shows where you look for belonging.
Why is my 4th house bigger or smaller than 30°?
Hali works in Placidus houses, and Placidus measures the sky in hours rather than equal wedges. Far from the equator, that makes some houses huge and others tiny. Below is the range of the 4th house through one day at four latitudes.
| Place | Latitude | Smallest 4th house | Largest 4th house |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equator | 0° | 27.6° | 32.6° |
| Madrid | 40.4°N | 21° | 36.6° |
| London | 51.5°N | 17.5° | 39.8° |
| Reykjavík | 64.1°N | 8.2° | 49.2° |
Near the poles, above about 66° latitude, Placidus has no answer, and Hali falls back on Whole Sign houses and tells you it has.
What’s the difference between the 4th and 10th houses?
The 4th and 10th house are the two ends of the meridian, the line from the bottom of the sky to the top. The 4th is your private life and roots, the 10th your public life and calling. Most of us spend our whole lives learning to balance the two.
Frequently asked questions
Which parent does the 4th house show?
Traditionally the father, with the mother given to the 10th house, though many modern astrologers read the 4th as the parent who nurtured you most. Hali reads both houses together.
Is the 4th house the same as my IC?
Nearly. The IC is where the 4th house begins. In Placidus houses the 4th house can run on into the next sign, so it may hold more than one.
Does the 4th house show where I should live?
It describes what home means to you. For where on Earth your planets feel strongest, try Wanderlines, which maps every planet on the IC around the world.
Do I need my birth time for the 4th house?
Yes. The IC, like every house cusp, moves right round the chart in a day. No birth time means no 4th house from Hali, because a guess would be worse than nothing.
Sources and methods
Hali computed each house size from Placidus cusps, worked out at intervals through a day per latitude. Behind the clock sits a run through 2001 at 40.4° north, every fourth date, with the Sun’s house worked out in Placidus at ten minute steps by local solar time. The old house names and planetary joys come from the Hellenistic tradition, especially Vettius Valens, Anthology, and the medieval Latin names from the traditional verse that lists them in order.
