The 2nd house in astrology: money, values and self worth

The 2nd house is where your chart keeps its treasures. It comes straight after the Ascendant and describes what you gather around you once you have arrived: money, belongings, your talents and the quiet sense of what you are worth. Planets here show how you earn, how you spend and what makes you feel safe.

What does the 2nd house mean?

If the 1st house is the body you arrived in, the 2nd house is everything that keeps it going. Food on the table, a roof, a skill you can trade, the savings you tuck away for a rainy day. It’s the most practical house in the chart, and one of the most personal, because what we value says so much about who we are.

Modern astrologers read the 2nd house as self worth as well as net worth, and the two are tangled more often than we like to admit. A strong 2nd house can describe someone who knows their value and charges for it. A tender one can describe someone still learning that they are allowed to want things.

Why was the 2nd house called the Gate of Hades?

The 2nd house sits just under the eastern horizon. As the sky turns through the day, the planets in it are still underground, waiting to rise. Some Hellenistic astrologers called it the Gate of Hades, the threshold of the underworld.

Later tradition chose a gentler name, Lucrum, gain, and that is the one that stuck. Both fit, in a way. What we earn and keep is what carries us up into the light.

Which birth time puts your Sun in the 2nd house?

The sky makes a full turn around you every day, carrying the Sun through each house in turn. Small hours babies, born long after midnight and still well before dawn, usually have the Sun here. We checked the Sun’s house every ten minutes on days spread through a whole year, and these are the hours that land it here most often.

Born between about 2am and 5am? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 2nd house.

Share of births with the Sun in the 2nd house, by hour of local solar time, at 40° north (the latitude of Madrid and New York). Daylight saving and time zones can move your clock an hour or so away from solar time, so check your own chart to be sure.

What do planets in the 2nd house mean?

Each planet here colours how you earn, keep and spend. The nearer it sits to the cusp, where the house begins, the louder it tends to be.

Sun in the 2nd house. Self respect grows with what you build and own. Earning your own way matters to you more than people realise.

Moon in the 2nd house. Security is emotional for you. A full fridge and a little money put away can calm you more than any pep talk.

Mercury in the 2nd house. Words, ideas, trade or teaching can all turn into income, and the next plan is usually already forming.

Venus in the 2nd house. Here Venus sits in the house of its own sign, Taurus. Expect an eye for quality, a knack for attracting resources and a soft spot for beautiful things.

Mars in the 2nd house. Effort earns it and impulse can spend it just as fast. Money is something you go out and get.

Jupiter in the 2nd house. Generosity and growth circle your resources. Abundance tends to find you, and so does the temptation to overspend.

Saturn in the 2nd house. Money is serious business for you. It may come slowly or after hard lessons, and what you build tends to last.

What if my 2nd house is empty?

An empty 2nd house is no comment on your bank balance. With twelve houses and only ten planets, gaps are built into every chart. Your 2nd house cusp sign and its ruling planet still describe your relationship with money and worth, and wherever that ruler sits shows where your resources tend to come from.

Why is my 2nd house bigger or smaller than 30°?

Placidus houses, which Hali uses, are measured in time, not in equal 30° slices. Born far from the equator, you get houses that balloon and houses that pinch. Over one full day, at four different latitudes, the 2nd house ranges like this.

PlaceLatitudeSmallest 2nd houseLargest 2nd house
Equator0°27.6°32.6°
Madrid40.4°N20.5°41.4°
London51.5°N16.8°47.7°
Reykjavík64.1°N7.6°68.5°

Beyond roughly 66° latitude the Placidus maths fails outright, and Hali moves to Whole Sign houses, with a note on your chart saying so.

What’s the difference between the 2nd and 8th houses?

The 2nd house is what is yours. Across the chart, the 8th house holds what you share, borrow, inherit or merge with someone else. Together they tell the whole story of resources, the private and the shared.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2nd house show if I’ll be rich?

No single house can promise that, and Hali won’t pretend otherwise. The 2nd house describes your style with money and what you value. For the fuller picture, add the 10th house of career and the 8th house of shared money.

Which planet rules the 2nd house?

Naturally Venus, through Taurus. In your own chart, the ruler is the planet that rules the sign on your 2nd house cusp.

Do I need my birth time for the 2nd house?

Yes. Without it, any planet could sit in any of the twelve houses, since the houses wheel right round once a day. Rather than guess, Hali leaves them off.

Sources and methods

House sizes come from Placidus cusps that Hali sampled across a whole day at each latitude. For the clock, we placed the Sun in its Placidus house at 40.4° north at each ten minute mark in local solar time, on one day in every four during 2001. For the planetary joys and old names we lean on Valens and the Hellenistic writers around him (his Anthology above all), and for the Latin names on the traditional rhyme that runs through the houses one by one.
