What does the 6th house mean?
This house describes how you work day to day, the habits that hold you together and the ways your body asks to be cared for. It also covers service, the people you help and the people who help you, and traditionally the small animals in your home.
Planets here show what keeps you well and what wears you down. Someone with a busy 6th house often finds peace in rituals, lists, craft and useful work, and can struggle to rest until every last thing is done.
Why was the 6th house called Bad Fortune?
The 6th house makes no traditional aspect to the Ascendant, so the old astrologers said it couldn’t see the 1st house, and that its affairs couldn’t help you. They tied it to illness, toil and hardship, and gave Mars, the planet of strain and effort, its joy here.
Modern astrologers are kinder, and so are we. The 6th is the house of craft and care, where effort turns into skill and small habits turn into a good life.
Which birth time puts your Sun in the 6th house?
The turning sky moves the Sun through all twelve houses each day, so the clock time of your birth sets its house. Arrive in the early evening, soon after sunset, and the Sun will usually be sitting just below the western horizon in your 6th house. These hours come from placing the Sun at ten minute steps through a year.
Born between about 5pm and 9pm? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 6th house.
What do planets in the 6th house mean?
The planets here show up in your routines, your work and your body. A planet near the cusp usually has the most say.
Sun in the 6th house. Useful work is where you shine. Doing something well, and being needed, gives you a deep sense of purpose.
Moon in the 6th house. Routines are your emotional anchors. Often your body knows how you feel before your mind does.
Mercury in the 6th house. Virgo is the 6th house’s natural sign, and Virgo answers to Mercury. Organised, analytical and handy, you are the one who fixes it.
Venus in the 6th house. Grace comes into your daily life, and love or friendship often turns up at work. A kind workplace matters to you.
Mars in the 6th house. In the old tradition this was Mars’s joy. Hard work comes with fierce energy, and your body needs real movement to stay well.
Jupiter in the 6th house. Work tends to be generous with you. Good colleagues, helpful routines and a healthy dose of optimism.
Saturn in the 6th house. A serious, devoted worker who can carry too much. Steady habits and true rest are your best medicine.
What if my 6th house is empty?
Even with nothing in it, the 6th keeps running your days. Ten planets spread over twelve houses always leave some empty. The sign on the cusp, and the planet ruling that sign, still set your daily rhythm and how you look after yourself, and the ruler’s house shows where your energy goes each day.
Why is my 6th house bigger or smaller than 30°?
Hali’s house system, Placidus, divides the sky by time instead of handing every house the same 30°. Move away from the equator and the differences grow. Here is how much the 6th house grows and shrinks in the course of a day, measured at four latitudes.
| Place | Latitude | Smallest 6th house | Largest 6th house |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equator | 0° | 27.6° | 32.6° |
| Madrid | 40.4°N | 19.6° | 47.8° |
| London | 51.5°N | 15.7° | 60.5° |
| Reykjavík | 64.1°N | 6.9° | 114.9° |
Above about 66° latitude Placidus has no solution at all. There Hali switches to Whole Sign houses, and your chart is labelled accordingly.
What’s the difference between the 6th and 12th houses?
Both are houses of tender care. The 6th is the daily routine and the visible work of staying well. Retreat, rest and everything that happens out of sight go to the 12th house. Burn out in one, and the other usually sends the bill.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 6th house show my career?
It shows your daily work and working conditions. Your career, reputation and calling belong to the 10th house.
Does the 6th house show health problems?
The tradition links it to illness and health. Astrology isn’t medicine, so Hali uses it to talk about habits and wellbeing, never to diagnose anything.
Why are pets in the 6th house?
Traditional astrologers gave small animals to the 6th house, as part of the household that serves and is served. Large animals went to the 12th.
Do I need my birth time for the 6th house?
Yes. Houses depend on the exact moment, because the whole wheel turns once every day. Hali won’t place planets in houses on a guessed time.
Sources and methods
House sizes come from Placidus cusps that Hali sampled across a whole day at each latitude. For the clock, we placed the Sun in its Placidus house at 40.4° north at each ten minute mark in local solar time, on one day in every four during 2001. For the planetary joys and old names we lean on Valens and the Hellenistic writers around him (his Anthology above all), and for the Latin names on the traditional rhyme that runs through the houses one by one.
