The 8th house in astrology: intimacy, shared money and transformation

The 8th house has a reputation, and it has earned a little of it. This is where your chart keeps its deepest waters: intimacy, trust, other people’s money, loss, inheritance, the things we only say at 3am. It’s also where we transform. Nobody leaves the 8th house quite the same as they came in.

What does the 8th house mean?

Where the 2nd house is what you own, the 8th is what you share. Joint accounts, a partner’s income, loans, taxes and inheritances live here, along with the intimacy that comes from letting someone close enough to share anything at all.

Traditionally it was the house of death. Modern astrologers also read it as the endings that make room for something new: the breakup that frees you, the crisis that shows you who you really are. Planets here tend to go deep, or not at all.

Is the 8th house about death?

Traditionally, yes. It was the house of death and inheritance. That doesn’t mean a planet here predicts anything frightening, and Hali never makes predictions like that.

Hellenistic astrologers called it the Idle place, because it makes no traditional aspect to the Ascendant and couldn’t act on your behalf. Most people with a busy 8th house simply feel things intensely, love deeply and are fascinated by what lies beneath the surface.

Which birth time puts your Sun in the 8th house?

As the sky turns through its daily circle, the Sun works its way round all twelve houses, which is why your birth hour matters. Mid afternoon is the usual time for an 8th house Sun, with the Sun past its peak and starting down the western sky. The clock shows the hours we found most often, from ten minute samples across a year.

Born between about 2pm and 5pm? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 8th house.

Share of births with the Sun in the 8th house, by hour of local solar time, at 40° north (the latitude of Madrid and New York). Daylight saving and time zones can move your clock an hour or so away from solar time, so check your own chart to be sure.

What do planets in the 8th house mean?

Nothing placed here stays shallow for long. Look first at any planet near the cusp, since that’s usually where the intensity gathers.

Sun in the 8th house. The deep end is where you shine. Psychology, research, finance and healing can all call to you.

Moon in the 8th house. Feelings run deep and private. You bond intensely and need complete trust before you let anyone all the way in.

Mercury in the 8th house. A detective’s mind. You want the secret, the motive and the thing nobody is saying out loud.

Venus in the 8th house. All or nothing is your style in love, and the pull you feel is hard to explain. Shared resources may come to you through partners.

Mars in the 8th house. Mars rules Scorpio in the old tradition. You meet crisis with courage, and your desire runs strong.

Jupiter in the 8th house. Generosity often flows to you through other people: partners, investors, inheritances. You come back from hard times stronger.

Saturn in the 8th house. Trust takes time for you. You handle shared money and responsibility with care, and your inner strength is quietly enormous.

What if my 8th house is empty?

Your inner depths are not on hold just because the 8th is empty. Every chart has empty houses, since twelve is more than ten. How you share, trust and change still shows in the cusp sign and its ruling planet, and where that ruler lands shows where you go deep.

Why is my 8th house bigger or smaller than 30°?

Because the houses in Placidus, the system Hali uses, are drawn by time and not in equal 30° wedges. Away from the equator, sizes drift further apart. Measured round the clock at four latitudes, the 8th house comes out like this.

PlaceLatitudeSmallest 8th houseLargest 8th house
Equator0°27.6°32.6°
Madrid40.4°N20.5°41.4°
London51.5°N16.8°47.7°
Reykjavík64.1°N7.6°68.5°

Above about 66° latitude Placidus can’t be computed, which is why Hali switches those charts to Whole Sign houses, with a line on the chart to tell you.

What’s the difference between the 8th and 2nd houses?

What is yours alone, earned and kept, sits in the 2nd house. The 8th is what you share and what others share with you. One builds security on your own, the other asks you to trust someone with it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a planet in the 8th house bad?

No. It’s a house of depth, not doom. Planets here often bring real psychological insight and emotional courage.

Does the 8th house show inheritance?

It covers inheritance and other people’s money in the traditional scheme. It describes themes, never amounts or dates.

Do I need my birth time for the 8th house?

Yes. Shift the birth time by a few hours and every planet can change house, because the wheel turns once a day. Hali leaves the houses blank sooner than guess.

Sources and methods

Hali computed each house size from Placidus cusps, worked out at intervals through a day per latitude. Behind the clock sits a run through 2001 at 40.4° north, every fourth date, with the Sun’s house worked out in Placidus at ten minute steps by local solar time. The old house names and planetary joys come from the Hellenistic tradition, especially Vettius Valens, Anthology, and the medieval Latin names from the traditional verse that lists them in order.
