What does the 5th house mean?
This is the house of delight. It describes how you fall in love, the first rush and the butterflies (the long commitment belongs to the 7th), what you make with your own hands and heart, and how you express yourself when nobody is grading you.
It’s also the traditional house of children, the ones we raise and the creative work we pour ourselves into. Planets here want to be seen enjoying themselves, and they usually make everyone around them a little happier too.
Why was the 5th house called Good Fortune?
In the Hellenistic tradition the 5th was the place of Good Fortune, and Venus had her joy here: the planet of love in the house of pleasure. It sits in a trine to the 1st house, the most harmonious angle in astrology, so its gifts were thought to flow toward you easily.
Joy, in other words, was considered lucky. The old astrologers were right about that one.
Which birth time puts your Sun in the 5th house?
A single day turns the whole sky around you, so the Sun visits every house between one sunrise and the next. A 5th house Sun usually means an evening birth, a few hours after sunset, while the dinner plates are still on the table. Here are the hours that came up most often when we placed the Sun at ten minute marks across a year.
Born between about 8pm and 10pm? There is a good chance your Sun is in your 5th house.
What do planets in the 5th house mean?
Here is where play, flirting and making things get their colour. A planet near the cusp tends to set the tone.
Sun in the 5th house. Leo is this house’s natural sign, and the Sun rules Leo, so it’s in good company. Creating, performing, playing or loving out loud is when you come alive.

An empty 5th house won’t stop you having fun, promise. Every chart has a few vacant houses, since there are fewer planets than houses to go round. Why is my 5th house bigger or smaller than 30°?
Placidus is the reason. Hali uses it, and it slices the sky by time, not into twelve equal pieces. The further from the equator, the more lopsided things get. Across one day, at four latitudes, the 5th house measures as follows.

At latitudes above about 66°, Placidus simply can’t be drawn, so Hali gives those charts Whole Sign houses and says it has done so.
What’s the difference between the 5th and 11th houses?
The 5th house is your own joy, your romance and your creativity. Joy shared is the business of the 11th house, with friendship, community and the future you build together. One is the dance, the other is everyone you dance with.

Romance, attraction, dating and the joy of falling in love sit in the 5th. Committed partnership and marriage belong to the 7th house.
Does the 5th house show children?
Yes, in the old tradition, along with your experience of being a parent. It can’t tell you how many children you will have, and Hali won’t try.
Do I need my birth time for the 5th house?
Yes. Every house, the 5th included, sweeps round the chart in a day, so a missing birth time leaves every planet’s house open. Hali would rather show nothing than show a guess.

The size table rests on Placidus cusps calculated by Hali at regular steps through one day for each latitude. The birth time clock puts the Sun in its Placidus house at 40.4° north for every fourth day of 2001, in ten minute steps of local solar time. The joys of the planets, and the houses’ old names, follow Hellenistic sources, chiefly Vettius Valens, Anthology. The Latin names are taken from the medieval verse that lists the houses in order.
