Planet
Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet, named for the king of the Roman gods. In astrology it rules growth, luck, generosity, belief and the urge to go further.
Where the name comes from
Jupiter is named for the king of the Roman gods, the ruler of the sky and the thrower of thunderbolts. The name fits. It is by far the largest planet, big enough to hold every other planet inside it with room to spare, and it shines steady and bright and unhurried.
The moons that changed everything
In 1610 Galileo pointed a new telescope at Jupiter and saw four little points of light beside it that moved night to night. They were moons, circling Jupiter and not the Earth. That single observation helped break the old idea that everything revolved around us, which makes Jupiter’s moons some of the most important dots anyone ever connected.
A storm older than your country
Jupiter has no solid surface, just endless bands of cloud, and one storm, the Great Red Spot, has been raging for at least a few hundred years. It is a hurricane wide enough to swallow the Earth whole.
Jupiter in a birth chart
Astrologers call Jupiter the greater benefic, the most helpful planet in the traditional scheme. It is read as growth, faith, generosity, teaching, travel, good fortune and the big picture. Traditionally it rules Sagittarius and Pisces. Its sign describes how you expand and what you believe in, and its house shows where life tends to open doors, or where you are most likely to overdo things. Jupiter’s gifts come with one reliable side effect, too much of a good thing.
How to find yours
Jupiter spends roughly a year in each sign, so everyone born within the same year or so shares a Jupiter sign. Hali’s daily positions show it in Gemini from 26 May 2024, in Cancer from 10 June 2025 and in Leo from 30 June 2026 until 26 July 2027. Its house needs a birth time. The guides start with Jupiter in Sagittarius, and the transits page follows where it is now.
In timing
Because its cycle is about twelve years, Jupiter is a favourite of timing techniques. Its returns, and its passages over the Sun, Moon and angles, are read as periods of opportunity and expansion. Jupiter and Saturn meet in the sky about every twenty years, a conjunction that astrologers from medieval Persia to Renaissance Europe used to mark the big turns of history.
Common confusions
Jupiter in a strong place does not guarantee money, and Jupiter retrograde is not bad luck. Jupiter is retrograde for about four months of every year, so around a third of people are born with it. Read it as growth that happens quietly or later.
Questions
Can I see Jupiter's moons?
Yes. Its four biggest moons line up beside it in a tiny row, and even a steady pair of binoculars will show them as little points of light.
What is a Jupiter return?
Jupiter takes about twelve years to go round the zodiac, so it comes back to its birth position around ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and so on. Astrologers read each return as the start of a new cycle of growth.
