Why it's called the Strawberry Moon

Named for the short wild strawberry harvest of early summer, a name used by several Algonquin peoples. In Europe the same moon was sometimes called the Rose Moon.

The stars behind this full moon

Signs follow the seasons and constellations are patterns of stars, and the two have drifted apart over the centuries. At 27°33′ Sagittarius, the Moon stands in front of Sagittarius, the archer, so this time the sign and the stars agree. The Sun, on the far side of the sky at 27°33′ Gemini, is in front of Taurus.

How close is the Moon?

At 401,943 km from Earth, this is the 10th closest of the 12 full moons of 2027. It looks 1% wider than the farthest full moon of the year, on 18 July 2027, a difference that is easier to measure than to see.

Perigee, the closest point of this orbit, comes on 6 June 2027 at 14:53 UTC, 12 days before the exact full moon, at 361,692 km. Apogee, the farthest point, comes on 22 June 2027 at 405,686 km.

The planets at this full moon

Where everything else stands at the exact moment, and any major aspect each planet makes to the Moon, using the same orbs Hali uses in every chart.

PlanetPositionAspect to the Moon
MercuryCancer 4°03′ retrogradeOpposition, 6.5° orb
VenusGemini 12°49′None
MarsVirgo 15°49′None
JupiterLeo 23°04′Trine, 4.5° orb
SaturnAries 25°40′Trine, 1.9° orb
UranusGemini 7°04′None
NeptuneAries 6°32′Square, 9.0° orb
PlutoAquarius 6°48′ retrogradeNone

The tightest contact is a trine from Saturn, 1.9° from exact. A trine from Saturn tends to make its themes easy to draw on. With Mercury opposite the Moon, its themes tend to show up as a pull in another direction. A square from Neptune adds some friction, which often gets things moving. Mercury and Pluto are retrograde at this moment.

Planets to look for

The bright Moon washes out faint stars, but the planets still shine through.

  • Mercury is too close to the Sun to see.
  • Venus is too close to the Sun to see.
  • Mars is in the evening sky after sunset, in front of Leo.
  • Jupiter is in the evening sky after sunset, in front of Leo.
  • Saturn is in the morning sky before dawn, in front of Pisces.

Eclipse season

The Moon is 44.6° from the North Node, one of the two points where its path crosses the Sun's. Eclipses only happen when a new or full moon falls near a node, so this one falls outside eclipse season. The next eclipse is the penumbral lunar eclipse at the full moon of July 2027.

A full moon in Sagittarius

With the Sun opposite in Gemini, this full moon asks what you actually believe once the chatter stops. Plans, travel and the urge for something bigger than your routine tend to get loud.

Astrology reads full and new moons as moments for reflection, not predictions. Take what helps and leave the rest.
