Why it's called the Pink Moon

Named for creeping phlox, a pink wildflower that blooms early in spring in eastern North America. The Moon itself looks no pinker than usual.

The stars behind this full moon

Signs follow the seasons and constellations are patterns of stars, and the two have drifted apart over the centuries. At 12°21′ Libra, the Moon actually stands in front of Virgo, the maiden, not the constellation Libra is named after. The Sun, on the far side of the sky at 12°21′ Aries, is in front of Pisces.

How close is the Moon?

At 393,585 km from Earth, this is the 9th closest of the 13 full moons of 2026. It looks 3% wider than the farthest full moon of the year, on 31 May 2026, a difference that is easier to measure than to see.

Perigee, the closest point of this orbit, comes on 22 March 2026 at 11:38 UTC, 11 days before the exact full moon, at 366,846 km. Apogee, the farthest point, comes on 7 April 2026 at 404,960 km.

The planets at this full moon

Where everything else stands at the exact moment, and any major aspect each planet makes to the Moon, using the same orbs Hali uses in every chart.

PlanetPositionAspect to the Moon
MercuryPisces 14°39′None
VenusTaurus 2°59′None
MarsPisces 23°58′None
JupiterCancer 15°51′Square, 3.5° orb
SaturnAries 5°40′Opposition, 6.7° orb
UranusTaurus 28°48′None
NeptuneAries 2°14′None
PlutoAquarius 5°13′Trine, 7.1° orb

The tightest contact is a square from Jupiter, 3.5° from exact. A square from Jupiter adds some friction, which often gets things moving. With Saturn opposite the Moon, its themes tend to show up as a pull in another direction. A trine from Pluto tends to make its themes easy to draw on. No planet is retrograde at this moment.

Planets to look for

The bright Moon washes out faint stars, but the planets still shine through.

  • Mercury is in the morning sky before dawn, in front of Aquarius.
  • Venus is in the evening sky after sunset, in front of Aries.
  • Mars is in the morning sky before dawn, in front of Aquarius.
  • Jupiter is in the evening sky after sunset, in front of Gemini.
  • Saturn is too close to the Sun to see.

Eclipse season

The Moon is 33.7° from the South Node, one of the two points where its path crosses the Sun's. Eclipses only happen when a new or full moon falls near a node, so this one falls outside eclipse season. The next eclipse is the total solar eclipse at the new moon of August 2026.

This lunar cycle

This full moon is the peak of the cycle that began with the new moon in Pisces on 19 March 2026. The cycle ends with the new moon on 17 April 2026.

A full moon in Libra

With the Sun opposite in Aries, this full moon is about you and other people. Relationships, fairness and the balance of give and take tend to show themselves clearly.

Astrology reads full and new moons as moments for reflection, not predictions. Take what helps and leave the rest.

When the Moon is in Libra

Libra Moon days lean social and diplomatic. Conversations soften, people want things fair and pleasant, and it's a lovely time for dates, art and making up after a disagreement.
