Short answer: without a birth time you can still read most of your chart: your Sun sign, the sign of every planet, the aspects between them, and in most cases your Moon sign. What you can’t know is your Rising sign, your houses and your Midheaven, because those depend on the exact minute. Before giving up, check the full version of your birth certificate. It often lists the time when the short one doesn’t.
What can I learn without a birth time?
More than you might think. Here’s exactly what depends on the time and what doesn’t.

That leaves a lot to work with: every planet’s sign and every aspect between them describe your character, your drives and your inner tensions. You just can’t place them in the areas of life the houses describe.
Why is my Moon sign sometimes uncertain?
Because the Moon is fast. It moves about 13 degrees a day and spends only about two and a quarter days in each sign.
That means the Moon changes sign on roughly 4 days out of every 10. If you were born on one of those days and don’t know the time, your Moon could be in either of two signs.
A good calculator should tell you this instead of quietly picking one. Hali shows both possible signs and the exact time the Moon switched, so if you know even roughly when you were born (“it was morning”) you can often work out which one is yours. Try it with the Moon sign calculator.
Why does the Rising sign need an exact time?
Because the whole zodiac rises over the eastern horizon in about 24 hours, so a new sign rises roughly every two hours on average.
It’s not perfectly even. Depending on the sign and how far north or south you were born, a sign can take anywhere from under an hour and a half to nearly three hours to rise. Born near the start or end of that window, and a difference of 10 or 20 minutes can change your Rising sign completely.
Houses are even more sensitive. The house cusps shift about one degree every four minutes, so planets near a house boundary can move from one house to the next with a small change in time. Where can I find my birth time?
Start with official records, then family ones.
- The long-form or full birth certificate. Many places record the time on the full birth record even when the short certificate leaves it out. Always ask specifically for the full, long-form or integral copy.
- Hospital or maternity records. Some hospitals keep delivery records for decades and will release them to you.
- Baby books, birth announcements and letters. Parents often wrote the time down.
- Family memory. Ask more than one person. “Just after breakfast” or “during the evening news” still narrows the window.
- Religious records. Some baptism or naming records note the time of birth.
What the official record includes depends on where you were born:

Rules change, so check the current guidance of the registry where you were born.
What if my time is only approximate?
An approximate time is far better than none. If you know you were born “between 2 and 4 in the morning”, you can check whether your Rising sign stays the same across that whole window.
If it does, you know your Rising sign even without the exact minute. If the window crosses a sign change, you have two candidates, and reading about both usually makes one feel clearly more like you. In Hali, choose Roughly when you enter your time and we’ll treat it that way.
What is a solar chart?
A solar chart is a useful stand-in when you have no time at all. It places your Sun sign in the 1st house, the next sign in the 2nd house, and so on around the wheel.
It’s the system behind most magazine and newspaper horoscopes, which are written for everyone with the same Sun sign. It won’t tell you your real Rising sign, but it gives a consistent way to think about houses and to follow transits.

What is birth time rectification?
Rectification is when an astrologer estimates your birth time by working backwards from important, dated events in your life, such as moves, marriages, accidents or career changes, and testing which birth times fit them best.
It can be an interesting exercise, but results vary and two astrologers can land on different times. Treat a rectified time as an educated guess, not a fact, and prefer a documented time whenever you can find one.
