What compatibility in astrology actually means
Astrology compatibility is not a score. It is not a percentage. It is a description of how two charts interact, where the easy connections are and where the friction lives. Every relationship has both, and a responsible compatibility reading acknowledges that complexity instead of flattening it into a number.
When astrologers examine compatibility, they are looking at the relationships between two complete birth charts. This means comparing not just Sun signs but Moon signs, Venus placements, Mars positions, Ascendants and every other point in both charts. The result is a detailed picture of how two people are likely to experience each other.
Synastry charts
Synastry is the most common method for assessing astrological compatibility. It works by overlaying one person's birth chart on top of the other's and examining the aspects (angular relationships) that form between the two sets of planets.
For example, if your Venus falls on your partner's Mars, that is a conjunction between your planet of attraction and their planet of desire. Astrologers interpret this as a strong physical and romantic connection. If your Saturn squares their Moon, the interpretation shifts toward emotional tension, feelings of restriction or a dynamic where one person feels judged by the other.
Synastry does not tell you whether a relationship will work. It tells you what the relationship feels like for both people involved. The same aspect that creates intense attraction can also create intense conflict. Context matters, and the whole chart matters.
Composite charts
A composite chart takes a different approach. Instead of overlaying two charts, it creates a single new chart by calculating the midpoint between each pair of corresponding planets. Your Sun and your partner's Sun produce a composite Sun. Your Moon and theirs produce a composite Moon. And so on.
The resulting chart is read as the chart of the relationship itself, as though the relationship were its own entity with its own personality. The composite Sun describes the relationship's core purpose. The composite Moon describes its emotional tone. The composite Ascendant describes how the couple presents to the outside world.
Composite charts are particularly useful for understanding long-term dynamics. While synastry shows how two individuals affect each other, the composite chart shows what the relationship becomes as a thing in its own right.
Why Hali does not use percentages
Many astrology websites offer compatibility scores. You enter two birthdays and receive a number: 78% compatible, or 45%, or 92%. These numbers are invented. There is no astrological tradition that assigns numerical compatibility scores, and no serious astrologer would reduce a relationship to a single figure.
The problem with percentages is that they imply precision where none exists. A compatibility score suggests that a 90% match is objectively better than a 70% match, when in reality these numbers are generated by arbitrary weighting systems that vary from site to site. Two sites will give you two different numbers for the same pair of birthdays.
More importantly, percentages flatten the nuance that makes compatibility readings useful. A relationship might have extraordinary emotional compatibility and deeply challenging communication patterns. Reducing that to a single number erases the information that would actually help you understand the relationship.
Hali's compatibility tool, when it launches, will describe the specific aspects between two charts and explain what each one tends to produce in a relationship. It will note where the ease is and where the tension is. It will not pretend to know whether your relationship will succeed, because that depends on the two people involved, not their planets.
What compatibility readings can and cannot do
A good compatibility reading can articulate dynamics that both people already sense but have not named. It can identify recurring patterns, explain why certain interactions feel charged, and highlight areas where mutual understanding may require extra effort.
What it cannot do is predict whether a relationship will last, whether you should stay or leave, or whether someone is your soulmate. Astrology is a symbolic language, not a decision-making engine. Anyone who uses a compatibility chart to make definitive claims about a relationship's future is overreaching the tradition.
