At the moment you took your first breath, the sky above your birthplace held a specific arrangement of celestial bodies. The Moon was in a particular phase and position. Planets were scattered across the zodiac, some visible above the horizon and some below it. Certain stars and constellations were overhead, while others had not yet risen or had already set.
Your birth sky is that arrangement, reconstructed from astronomical data. It is not a birth chart, though it uses the same inputs. Instead of an abstract diagram of signs and houses, the birth sky shows you the actual visible sky from your birthplace at your birth moment, as though you had looked up.
How the birth sky is generated
The birth sky image uses the same ephemeris data that powers Hali's birth chart calculator. Given your birth date, time and geographic coordinates, we calculate the positions of the Sun, Moon and visible planets relative to your local horizon. We then render a representation of the sky as it would have appeared from that location at that moment.
The image includes the Moon in its correct phase, the positions of any planets that were above the horizon, and the approximate arrangement of prominent stars. If you were born during the day, the sky would have been bright and the stars invisible to the naked eye. If you were born at night, the scene shifts accordingly.
A personal image you can share
Your birth sky is uniquely yours. No one else born at a different time or place had the same view overhead. That makes the birth sky image a deeply personal artifact, more intuitive than a traditional chart wheel and more immediately meaningful to people who are not familiar with astrological notation.

A birth chart is a symbolic diagram. It translates planetary positions into signs, houses and aspects. It is the core tool of astrological interpretation, and it requires some knowledge to read.
A birth sky is a visual representation of the actual sky. It does not use zodiac signs or houses. It simply shows where celestial objects were positioned relative to the horizon. Think of it as the raw view that the birth chart abstracts and encodes.
Both are calculated from the same data. The birth chart is for interpretation. The birth sky is for seeing and feeling.
